I've been going to Sfumato for years and have always been very satisfied with my experience, but unfortunately my visit today did not meet my expectations. Although I am satisfied with the work done, Scheduling was inadequate and I found myself waiting far too long. My appointment started 10 minutes late, my foils were removed and hair was washed 15 minutes after the colorist asked the assistant to do the hair wash, and I had to wait for 30 minutes with wet, cold hair for the stylist to cut my hair, which was very unpleasant. The appointment lasted 3 hours when it is usually takes 2 hours. I hope this was just a one off experience.

Hallo Sfumato team! While I loved Jasmine who looked after me, and found the salon amazingly friendly and professional, unfortunately I wasn't happy with the result once I got home. Under the bright lights at the end of my session (on Friday 15 July) I tried to convince myself my hair had the striking blond highlights I'd asked for, but deep down I knew it didn't! After three hours in the chair I didn't have the heart to say anything to Jasmine. She's a really lovely lady and a very talented professional but somehow what I wanted didn't come off. Talking to Jasmine at the beginning of my session, I had said I wanted to look noticeably blonder. I said this several times during our chat and even made a couple of jokes that I hoped I wasn't sounding like a broken record. She had explained to me that going full-on blonde would require a big commitment to return to the salon after six weeks for the re-growth and I guess she talked me out of going full-on blonde. HOWEVER I did show her a couple of magazine images showing women with striking blonde highlights and again repeating that I wanted to look significantly different from my current overall 'dirty blonde' shade. I believe Jasmine could have done something with balayage or similar to create truly blond highlights without causing too much of a problem in terms of later re-growth around the part-line. Having agreed to not go fully blond, I had said several times that I wanted visibly blond highlights, particularly around my face. When Jasmine showed me the shades she was planning to use I did say "that one looks pretty dark" for the undertone shade. But after her explanation, and seeing that she was also using a creamy light shade of blonde, I had faith that we'd arrive at the desired effect. We had to use toner twice as Jasmine believed the first toner was too 'ash' - so off to the sink we went for a second go. I wasn't too worried about this... Anyway, possibly the lighter highlights she did were too fine, but when I cam out, my partner couldn't even tell I'd had anything done! And looking at myself in my bathroom mirror, my hair actually looked a tad darker than it had before! There were 'highlights' but these were super subtle and not obviously blonde. Unfortunately I was disappointed to have spent most of the afternoon in the chair and over $200 to look pretty much the same (except for slightly improved parting line, glossier hair and a nice blow dry) as I had when I walked in. I phoned the salon the next day to politely explain that I hadn't been too happy with my results and would like a few more highlights. The hint that I'd been unhappy with my results and was wondering if anything could be done to fix it was ignored by the gentleman I spoke to. I know some salons will actually do a re-work if customers aren't happy and while I wouldn't expect this necessarily, it would have been good if he'd shown more interest in understanding why I wasn't happy with my experience. He simply gave me a list of appointment times and left it at that.

Seems to be a common theme with hairdressers but it happens every time here that prices change and add ons are just part of the sales tactic. I asked over the phone if my 3 year old would be $35(last time I was quoted $30 but I had forgotten and thought it was $35) and she said it should be fine (I was never updated/confirmed but then just asked to pay $45). I didn't argue this time as the same thing happened last time and the owner?Wayne handed back the difference in cash in a very awkward scene. A toddler's haircut for $45 is steep. At other professional salon's it is $25-30 and the hair cut my son received was far worse this time than at the other place I will now go to(I specifically asked for the front to not be short as it makes him look strange .... she first had it still so long it was over his eyebrows so we said just a little more ... now it is about an inch above the eyebrows making it look terrible). I asked for advice on my poor health hair from the pools and she recommended a treatment. Then the person washing my hair didn't mention it so I asked ... she said "oh she didn't tell me anything about that" and then asked my hairdresser. The hairdresser just pointed to some bottle and said "just use that". The lady washing my hair then squirted some drops out of this bottle over my head and then just wrapped a towel over my head. I have had treatments before and it is usually an individual capsule that is then massaged thoroughly in. Big city prices and atmosphere inside ...but the rest doesn't follow through.

After my previous two appointments I was looking forward to visiting for the third time as I've usually left feeling confident and happy. However, my visit this time around was a little different. I walked out feeling satisfied with the end result of my hair, which is what counts at the end of the day, but unfortunately was left feeling quite belittled and a bit stupid. By no means am I suggesting my hairdresser projected this on purpose, however, I was slightly disappointed in the way she made me feel throughout my appointment. I would not normally give this kind of feedback but it has had an influence on where I receive my next hair cut.

I moved from interstate a year ago, and am looking for a new hair salon. Sfumato didn’t feel quite the right one for me. The environment felt a little rushed and chaotic, and the consultation was very brief. Value for money didn’t feel quite right either.
