I am so glad that I chose to see Sofia at Unico for my most recent haircut. Between lockdown and struggling with anxiety about catching or spreading COVID between lockdowns, it had been a long two years since my last haircut and I looked and felt pretty shabby. I have very fine hair that always ends up looking flat and limp and bleh when it is long. I also have a very square face shape that can make a shorter haircut unflattering if the length ends near my jawline without softening the angles of my forehead or giving me a bit of roundness. Layers can help in that regard but it is a fine line between shaping to flatter my face and ending up with too many layers, which make my fine hair look very wispy and destroy any illusion of volume, particularly at the ends. In my experience all hairdressers understand how to work with fine hair and I've had many terrible haircuts where I have ended up with more layers than my hair can handle because the hairdresser seems to think more layers always means more illusion of volume. Finding products that add volume without instead weighing down and flattening my hair out can also be like walking a tightrope above a pit of limp, greasy hair. I largely left the cut up to Sofia, only telling her I wanted to go short, either very short pixie or a bob. I had not booked enough time for a pixie cut which made the decision very easy and I'm so glad. Sofia knew exactly what to do, she cut my hair confidently and instinctively. I think she could have done it with her eyes closed even though it was the first time she'd cut my hair. She put just enough layers towards the ends of my hair to add the appearance of more hair/more volume without inadvertently just thinning my hair out. I don't know how to describe it properly but Sofia managed to soften the angles of my forehead and put the layers/volume of the cut in a place that rounded out the sides of my face instead of adding volume right at.my jawline and turning me into a triangle head. Sofia also used a mousse while blow-drying my hair that perfectly balanced adding volume and texture without adding weight or greasiness. I had to have it and happily she carried it for sale at the salon. The mousse also has a lovely sweet caramel scent that I have enjoyed while using it at home. Sofia gave me great advice and instruction on ways to style my hair to make the most of the beautiful cut she had done. I'm not a morning person so I sometimes worry that a hairdresser will cut my hair in a way that will only look good if I blowdry it in the same way that they do at the end of the haircut, taking a lot of time and effort that I'm too lazy and sleepy to do every day. But Sofia gave me advice about a few different options for styling my hair, from "slept through my alarm and don't have time to even think about plugging in my hairdryer" through to "I've conquered my morning routine and am going to leave the house looking like I've come from the salon." Usually I land somewhere in the middle but the amazing thing about the haircut Sofia gave me is that it looks incredible no matter which side of the spectrum I have ended up on on any given morning. I love it! Sofia was also a delightful person to be around and even though I am very shy I still felt very comfortable throughout my experience at Unico. Sofia was a professional but she was warm and I could tell she really cares about her salon and her clients. I couldn't be more happy to recommend Unico to anyone who is looking for a pleasant and welcoming salon experience with helpful and talented hairdressers.
